Brook vs Vargas

Set for May/June at catchweight?

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxing

Intuboxing.com has learned that a catchweight fight between Sheffield's former IBF world welterweight champion, Kell Brook, and Former WBA 'Regular' world lightweight champion and WBO world welterweight champion. Los Angeles native, Jessie Vargas is in the works for either late May or early June.

Matchroom Boxing's, Eddie Hearn, who promotes both men. Has said that the weight has yet to be determined. But likely to be at a weight between the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, and 150 pounds. At present, it is unlikely that the fight will land on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's world heavyweight title clash with Jarrell 'Big Baby' Miller on June 1st at Madison Square Garden, New York. Nor on the proposed heavyweight debut of Oleksandr Usyk against Alexander Povetkin in Chicago on May 18th. Instead the fight will make up a card on America's west coast.

Brook has suffered a frustrating few years in the sport. After claiming the IBF crown in August 2014 against Shawn Porter at StubHub Center in Carson City, California. 'The Special One' has endured a torrid time both in and out of the squared circle. Shortly after beating 'Showtime' Shawn Porter, Brook was stabbed whilst on holiday, putting him on the shelf for six months. A defence against a top name eluded the man from the Steel City. After taking on Jo Jo Dan in a mandatory defence, and Birmingham's Frankie Gavin in quick succession. Fights against Brandon Rios and Diego Chavez, two world level opponents failed to come to fruition. Instead Brook took on Canada's Kevin Bizier.

The rest is well documented. Brook dared to be great by climbing two weight divisions to face former unified world middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin. Before losing his IBF crown in his own back yard to Texan native, and current IBF world welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr. Brook held his own in both fights before eye injuries ultimately resulted in a corner stoppage and a knockout loss respectively.

A return to the ring at 154 pounds in March of last year saw him blitz Sergey Rabchenko in two rounds. Before a lacklustre twelve round unanimous decision victory over Michael Zefera followed last December.

A fight against long-time rival, Amir Khan looked to be in the offing. Only for his nemesis to elect to fight WBO world welterweight champion, Terrence Crawford instead.

Vargas will undoubtedly be looking to get back to winning ways after an equally frustrating 2018. Draws against Adrien Broner in April and Thomas Dulorme in October have left him without a win since December 2017 and just two wins in his last six fights.

The two men were due to square off in 2016. Vargas had confirmed that he had accepted to fight Brook at Bramall Lane on September 3rd. Only to see the fight fall through after Brook elected to instead take a big-money fight with Golovkin.
