Campbell in WBC eliminator/promoter leaks AJ return date?

Yvan Mendy’s promoter leaks AJ return date

IntuBoxing has learned that Luke Campbell (18-2, 15 KOs) will fight Yvan Mendy (40-4-1, 19 KOs) in a WBC lightweight title final eliminator.

This is not just a chance for Campbell to challenge for a world title for a second time. But it is also a chance to avenge what was Campbell’s first loss as a professional.

Campbell suffered a split decision loss to Mendy in December, 2012 on the undercard of Anthony Joshua/Dillian Whyte at London’s O2 Arena. The London Olympic Games gold medalist worked his way to world title contention by reeling off five wins following the loss. Only to suffer a second loss at the hands of Jorge Linares, in a fight in which Campbell more than proved that he is ever bit a world level contender.

Mendy has been active since beating Campbell. He has picked up not only seven victories, but the European and WBC silver lightweight titles in the process. At the age of thirty-three, three years older than Campbell this may well be his last chance at fighting for a world title.

The specifics of the fight are unclear, although it seems Mendy’s team have accepted an offer from Matchroom meaning the fight does not need to go to purse bids.

In accepting the fight Mendy’s promoter appears to have spilled the beans that this fight will serve as support to Anthony Joshua’s next fight, which the French team has revealed will be at Wembley Stadium on either the 22nd or 29th September.
