Golovkin/Canelo 2 ... Game On?

Promoter, Tom Loeffler says the deal is nearly done.

Eighteen days ago the boxing world was robbed of a fight so many of us desperately wanted to see. But it was not meant to be.

I won't bore you with the small details as to why we didn't get to see Gennady Golovkin battle Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez because you all know by now right? No? Ok, I'll recap VERY quickly. Canelo tested positive for Clenbuterol twice on February 17th and 20th. This lead to a 6-month backdated suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. However, the Mexican superstar did pull out of the bout before the suspension was put in place. Meaning no rematch and instead, boxing fans worldwide saw Golovkin annihilate Vanes Martirosyan in just two short rounds.

Then for the first time in history, a hair follicle sample was requested by the NSAC from Canelo which showed no signs of Clenbuterol, seemingly exonerating him and making the 'tainted meat' excuse begin to hold some weight. This was until he refused to join the WBC's VADA 365 clean boxing program, which he promptly enrolled in the very next day .. There that just about does it.

But there appears to be an end in sight. Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loefller is optimistic that a deal for the rematch will be finalised shortly.

“I’ve been in regular contact with Eric,” Loeffler said, referring to Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez. “Both promoters, we’re ready to go to start promoting this fight. We’re just waiting on the fighters’ side, just to finalize any of the outstanding details there would be. … There is, for sure, a structure in place for it to take place – basically for it to be rescheduled from the May fight to the September date.”

“It wouldn’t be a long, drawn-out negotiation like it was before [for May 5],” Loeffler said. “It’s the biggest fight for both guys and it seems natural that both guys would want the fight. At the same time, you know, that’s why we’re here [at the hearing]. Gennady has certain obligations as a unified champion, and so that’s what we’re trying to do – if we can do the Canelo fight, appease the fans and what’s best for the sport, as far as doing the biggest fight in the sport of boxing. At the same time, we’re trying to abide by the rules of the sanctioning bodies that he has titles of, and those things don’t always connect.” (Credit BoxingScene)

Loeffler flew out to personally meet the IBF to discuss Golvokins mandatory situation this week. Golovkin's #1 contender to that title is Sergey Derevyanchenko. The governing body stating that something needs to be in place by August 3rd. Whilst there is no news on this we can only assume that a step aside fee may allow Golovkin to fight Alvarez with a contract in place that Golovkin MUST fight Derevyanchenko next.
