Joyce Demolishes Thomas In Two.

Joyce Wins First Professional Title in Only His Fourth Pro Fight

Joe Joyce is the new heavyweight champion of the commonwealth. Just let that sink in for a second.

Many pundits and fans alike thought it was too soon for the former Olympian, and I have to admit I was one of those that thought just that. Though it has to be said that his choice of clothing for the ring walk was interesting to say the very least.

Joyce began the fight by trying to impose himself physically in the first round, but Thomas did let off some early eye-catching combinations, specifically to the body. Though it was clear from the opening bell that Joyce had little to no respect for Thomas' power. This was evidenced by the way walked the Jamaican down. Joyce rocked Thomas massively by a big right hand. A right to the body at the death of the round sent Thomas crumpling to the canvas, but he was spared by the bell.

Joyce was warned by referee Terry O'Connor about wrestling. But he picked up at the beginning of the second stanza where he left off in the first. Lenroy Thomas seemed very overwhelmed by the sheer output from Joyce

A further barrage of shots had the Jamaican in trouble, a huge body shot had Thomas crumpled on the canvas. This time he was unable to beat the count.

Joyce told Sky sports after the fight.

"I thought I did a good job," said Joyce. "Hopefully gave everyone watching here and at home a good show. The Commonwealth title means a lot. I knew he would be a tricky opponent. But I just used my range and got to him.I'm up for anything. The world is my oyster. I would like to challenge for the British title, it's a lovely belt."

As is transpires the winner of the Sam Sexton/Hughie Fury fight next week will indeed be mandatory to Joyce's new title.

I was impressed by Joyce's punch output. But it is safe to say a more disciplined fighter will provide the new champion will a much tougher test
