New York Hotel Incident Kicks Off A Two Year War Of Words.
Less than 12 hours are left on the clock before we hear tonights opening bell at The MGM Grand, Las Vegas. And fight fans, i'm sure you're like me and just cannot wait to see how this plays out. We've brought you several pieces this week on how we, the journalists at Intuboxing.com see this fight unfolding. But, something we havent covered. Is, how did we get here in the first place?
Now, i'm sure you're thinking. Well duh, Mr Writer, Lomachenko has three belts. Teofimo Lopez has one. That's that.
Well, whilst this is true. The reason for the resentment between both camps actually stems from an argument that occured in a New York hotel, 2 years ago.
Allow me to set the scene. Vasyl Lomachenko had just unified his WBO and WBA World Lightweight crowns. Beating Jose Pedraza by unanimous decision. On said fight card a certain young lightweight by the name of Teofimo Lopez had just beaten Mason Menard. Taking his professional fight record to 11-0.
Both camps were at The Stewart Hotel post-fight. Were both camps confirmed that this is where the touch paper was lit. And Teofimo Lopez began a two-year long stint of calling out 'The Matriz' at every oppportunity.
“I was waiting by the elevator, he wasn’t sober.
“He was like, ‘My son is coming after you, he’ll blow your head off.’
“And I was like, ‘Okay, bring him over here.’
“He was walking in my direction. They [his friends] grabbed him by the arms and they apologised, saying, ‘Sorry, sorry,’ as they took him away.
“This was our first meeting. After that moment, he started to believe that they would become world champion.
“They started to promote their brand at the expense of my name by constantly mentioning me in their statements…
“I think it was very stupid, it’s not intelligent, it’s not smart.
“You are a grown man, you are a father, what are you doing?
“Of course when I’m fighting with him, I’ll remember what he did."
“I was by the lobby just hanging out and I see Lomachenko coming through,” he told ESPN.
“I’d never introduced myself to him so I said to him, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’
“I shake his hand and he just like ignored me.
“I’m from the streets, man, and I know when somebody doesn’t like you. So I just turned around and I went back to him.
“I said, ‘Hey man, you know what? We’re gonna take over the show and then my son is coming back to break your neck.’
“That’s when everything started.
“From that point on it was war with Loma.”
I dont know about you ladies and gentleman. But it really seems as though Lopez Sr has potentially thrown his son under a bus here. Too much too soon? Only time will tell.
