Mikey Garcia

Four weight world champion and pound for pound elect Mikey Garcia made history this past Saturday night

Four weight world champion and pound for pound elect Mikey Garcia made history this past Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas. But, he hasn't the time to savour his victory for he has decisions to make about his future. One that has ramifications for the both the world title pictures of the 135 & 140 pound divisions.

The new champion was made hard to work hard for his historic victory, winning a unanimous decision over former champion, Sergey Lipinets. The judges awarding Garcia the victory with scores of 117-110, 117-110 & 116-111. He left Texas bruised, battered content with his nights work and the IBF title draped over his shoulder.

However, he has but a mere ten days to make a decision over his future. He currently holds his newly won championship, as well as the WBC Lightweight title that he won by knocking out Dejan Zlaticanin cold in January 2017. One title will have to be vacated.

On Monday, the IBF  contacted Garcia via promoter. Richard Schaefer's Ringstar Sports to notify him of his mandatory obligation to contender Ivan Baranchyk. Baranchyk looked fantastic knocking Petr Petrov down three times in eight rounds in his world title eliminator.

Garcia has outlined his desire to fight one final time at 135 pounds. But the man he has talked about so much (Jorge Linares) looks close to signing a contract to fight pound for pound elite, Vasyl Lomachenko. Whilst a fight against the winner is plausible, he has not been particularly vocal in calling out the Ukranian two weight world champion.

Be it at 135, 140, 147 or even 154 pounds, Mikey Garcia is the wrong side of thirty years old. I hope the man that is quite possibly the best boxer-puncher in the ring very soon.
