Revenge Or Repeat

Robert Easter Jr mandated to fight #1 challenger Richard Commey

By Aaron Cooper

As fight fans, we all love a rematch, especially if the victor was awarded a contentious decision.

Lightweight world title challenger, Richard Commey was on the wrong end of such a decision in September 2016. He knocked down Robert Easter Jr in the right round of their world title fight. But Easter Jr was able to eke out a split decision in a bout for the vacant IBF lightweight title.

Easter Jr has gone on to defend that belt three times, besting Javier Fortuna last time out in January of this year. But Commey has had to work his way back up to the position of mandatory challenger.

Following his victory this past Saturday against Alejandro Luna in San Antonio, Texas. In a bout which served as a final eliminator. The IBF wrote to its champion to inform him of his obligations.

"Your mandatory defence is due on or before March 30, 2018," the IBF wrote. "The leading available contender is No. 1 Richard Commey. ... Negotiations should start immediately and be concluded by April 12, 2018. If you are unable to reach an agreement by April 12, 2018, the IBF will call for a purse bid to determine who will promote the bout, when and where."

Commey would not be unjustified in thinking that he should already be a world champion. Through his hard work, he will get a second chance. But will lightning strike the same place twice for Robert Easter Jr … Only time will tell
