WBO ‘interim’ Featherweight World Champion, Carl Frampton has long talked of putting on a big world title fight at Windsor Park, Northern Ireland’s National football stadium.

We know he will get his wish in some respects. Frampton will indeed headline a card at Windsor Park stadium with ‘The Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury in chief support. However, a big named opponent appears to be a key component that will inevitably be missing from the event.

Gary Russell Jr (WBC), Leo Santa Cruz (WBA) & Oscar Valdez (WBO) are unavailable, either through injury (Valdez) or in the former two’s case have very recently seen in ring action. Had Lee Selby emerged victorious on May 19th then it was thought to be he who would face Frampton. However, it was not to be after Selby lost his title in his sixth defense to Josh Warrington after the Leeds man put in the performance of his life to wrestle the IBF title away on a split decision. Warrington was quick to cool talk of a fight with ‘The Jackal’ citing time needed for a well earned rest.

August 18th is a little under ten weeks away. The talk of the town is that Luke Jackson (16-0, 7KO) will indeed be Frampton’s opponent. Jackson at 33 was late to pro boxing. He turned professional shortly after his appearance at London’s 2012 Olympic Games. However, he did have a lengthy amateur career which was highlighted by a bronze medal at The Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2016.

Jackson is the current title holder of the WBA Oceania, WBO Oriental and Australian Featherweight titles.

It’s surely not the fight Frampton would have wanted. But, it looks like that’s the fight he’s got.
