WBSS Update: Groves Must Prove Fitness

WBA 'Super' Champ Given 10 Days. Eubank Jr IS on standby

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

You've all heard me saying the World Boxing Super Series has been a breath of fresh air, and in many ways, it has been. The best have fought the best (with some exceptions). But the tournament is in serious danger of turning a portion of fans away and ruining all the great work that has gone into making the tournament so successful.

George Groves came into the WBSS with the WBA 'Super' Super-middleweight title around his waist, and when the seeding took place he was placed at the very top. The Ring Magazine also recognises Groves as the number one fighter in the division also. That ranking has largely been achieved by his success in the tournament, wiping out Jamie Cox in four rounds, and in this writers opinion, humiliating Chris Eubank Jr with a wide unanimous decision in February of this year.

Earlier in the week, IntuBoxing learned that there may be a twist in the tale, one that I and from social media's reaction, most of the boxing world were more than a little dissatisfied about. That news, of course, being that should Groves not be able to compete in the tournament, his vanquished foe, Chris Eubank Jr will take his place. Now I COULD launch into a massive tirade about why that will make a mockery of the tournament, but you know that already don't you?

BUT, all is not lost. There is a glimmer of hope that all of Groves' hard work will not be in vain. I felt that yesterday's press conference from the WBSS was lacking any real substance. After all, IntuBoxing and many other news outlets had already broken the news of some of the participants in the next tournament. Nay, the reason for the press conference looking a little thin firstly was because they haven't signed all of the participants to the new tournament yet. But secondly, because George Groves has been given ten days to prove his fitness. failure to do so will allow Eubank Jr to take his spot.

So 'Saint' Groves is in a race against time, and I will only too gladly come off of the fence and say I hope he is able to prove he is fit. He did everything asked of him, he should be allowed to finish the job he started.

We are waiting for the final discussions and reports from George before we know whether he will be able to make the timeline of the final," Kalle Sauerland said.

"The final will be before the summer break and not after. That's the tournament structure that has been in place since day one."

"We will stretch as far as we possibly can but the tournament structure will always be precedent. In 10 days we will make an announcement on whether George is in the final or not.

"We're looking for all kinds of solutions if it isn't possible with George. If we need a replacement then I would look for a solution from within the tournament so Eubank Jr is a name that would come up.

In the cruiserweight final the injury to WBC & WBO champion, Oleksandr Usyk is not as severe. His fight against IBF & WBA 'Super' champion, Murat Gassiev will also be finalised in the next ten days
